Nepal 2013

I visited Nepal as part of a Naturetrek birding trip called “Nepal- A Birdwatching Tour”.  We left London Heathrow airport on 10th February and arrived back on 20th, spending nine nights in Nepal.

The photos on these pages were all taken during the trip by myself using either a Panasonic DZ28 bridge camera, or a Nikon P6000 attached to a Swarovski ATX80 telescope.

Kathmandu Valley – Fairly close to Kathmandu terracing of the slopes was fairly common.

River Trisuti – A fairly typical view of the river which runs down the Kathmandu Valley.  We followed this for several hours stopping at several points looking for some key species. The particular section shown held Wallcreeper.

River Crossing – The locals had more than one way to cross the river.  I imagine the river would be difficult to cross in boats during the monsoon season.  A long way to the local shops!

River Crossing 2 – This would not be my chosen way to cross the river!

Kathmandu Valley – An impressive backdrop for birding.  One of our first stops was to try and see Ibisbill in which we were successful!.

The photo shows two of a total of four Ibisbills that were seen resting and feeding on a large gravel bar in the middle of the river.  A great start to the trip with one of the most wanted birds already seen.

This Wallcreeper was digiscoped as it moved across the rocks on the far side of the river.

Black Drongo – One of the most common species seen during the trip.

Oriental Magpie Robin  – Another common bird.

Chestnut-capped Laughing Thrush – Seen only at higher altitude at Phulchowki a mountain close to Kathmandu and which rises to 2740 metres.  We drove in four wheel drives vehicles above the snow line and close to the top on the mountain.  We encountered two flocks of this species.

White-collared Blackbird – Also seen at Phulchowki where a small group were feeding on berries.

Green-backed Tit – Several of these were seen at Phulchowki.

Black-throated Tit – One of the last new birds to be found during our day on Phulchowki, when we came across a mixed groups of Tits and other species.

Oriental White-eye – Seen in the same mixed flock as the two birds above.  A smart bird but difficult to digiscope!

Bank Myna – Seen in the middle of a busy town (see below).  Only seen at this site.

Watching the Bank Mynas – About four birds were present, plus a few locals!  Seen on the way to the local airport.
